Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor are the prime example. Apparently, Ranbir maintained his single hood status for the release of his recent three films, Wake Up Sid, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Rocket Singh. After the release he states that he is in love with Deepika. The next on-off couple, Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra fell-head-over-heels in love with each other during the filming of Kaminey. But if recent reports are to be believed, then, this couple goes for dinner regularly. Farah Khan and Shah Rukh Khan have had an unstable friendship in recent years.
Only famous families who once lived in famous residences return to haunt. If you’re not famous and if you don’t live in a famous old house, worry not. No ghost will come after you.
“Anything is possible” says Obama. Going by the same mantra, here’s my take (albeit ghoulish) on the deluge of spirits descending upon the new inmates of the White House.
Instead of daytime fairytales woven around Obama girls with grandma in tow (Michelle’s mom); or the First Lady’s fancy closet choking with designer clothes; or the president telling the star-studded artistes at last Sunday’s Lincoln Memorial “Yours are the voices I’ll take with me every day I walk into that Oval Office,” let’s focus on the nocturnal voices and spectral sightings he’ll carry to the Oval Office.
I’m afraid of apparitions. I’m sure you must be too. Still with all the media hype of the new inmates moving into the 209-year-old White House, we need to worry about the first family and their guests coming face to face with Abe Lincoln! Nearer home, let’s begin with the president who just left.
Will the spirit of George W Bush haunt the White House? Don’t be silly, you’ll turn around and say. Yes, I know he’s alive. But don’t you know that our spirits roam around freely when we are asleep and happily snoring?
Welcome to the real world! Picture then, Bush-in-spirit prowling around the Oval Office wondering why he was the most “misunderestimated” (sic) president as he recently whined to the press. You may not agree with me but most of us want to get under the skin of people we love to hate and are terribly jealous of.
We want to know why they succeed and not us. I’m sure Barack Hussein Obama or BHO now that Americans have reluctantly accepted the ‘H’ word, will have a bed-full of unwelcomed spirits each night when he goes to sleep with wife Michelle. All would like to snuggle with him, including G W Bush.
There will be a traffic jam in the presidential suite, what with the spirits of all 38 dead presidents and their wives falling over each other to get on the presidential bed. Among them will be the souls of the living four presidents. Two being father and son -- 41st & 43rd.
Abe Lincoln is a permanent fixture at the White House. Use your sixth sense. And if you don’t own one, then use your ESP. Now don’t ask me what that is all about? Surely you know that extrasensory perception makes you feel weird -- as if there’s someone invisible in the room. The new 44th is obsessed with president 16th. He lives and breathes Abraham Lincoln. I am sure BHO’s wish to be in constant company of his hero will come alive. Especially if he ventures out in the middle of the night to the second floor and winds his way down the corridor into the famous Lincoln bedroom. Poor Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands who was staying at the Lincoln bedroom is said to have fainted when she heard a knock at the door, opening it, she came face to face with the dead president causing her host, the red-faced President Franklin Roosevelt, a diplomatic pratfall.
We all know how Lincoln was gunned down in the prime of his presidential life. His body lay in state downstairs in the East Room before burial. They say whoever dies a violent death never rests in peace. Several White House staffers have had sightings of the dead president. They have heard echoing footsteps and knocking on the doors in the middle of the night. They have seen lights of the chandelier in the Lincoln bedroom come on after being duly switched off. They have felt an icy cold spot in the room. They have on a very early morning seen Lincoln lingering outside his former office. They have seen him pacing pensively posed with his hands clasped behind his back.
Mary Todd Lincoln, the first lady, is said to have held several séances in the White House to try and connect with her dead son, Willie, who died in the presidential mansion. After her husband’s assassination, she tried and succeeded in contacting her dead husband through mediums and séances of people calling spirits. (Didn’t we all do that in youth? Sitting before an alphabetical board with our 2nd finger on a lid or an upturned glass calling spirits and by Jove they’d come!)
Calling spirits is unnatural. They hate being summoned. I suggest you don’t dabble in it. Trust me it can scare the daylights out of you. My laptop just let out a weird sound… I have never heard this groan before… maybe I’m imagining. Let me quickly be done with this column.
Back to the ghosts of the White House.
Gary Walters, a former chief usher at the White House says he had an “experience” he cannot explain. He and three other policemen were standing next to the staircase coming up from the ground floor. “We all felt a cool rush of air pass between us and then two doors that stand open closed by themselves. I have never seen these doors move before without somebody specifically closing them by hand. It was quite remarkable.”
Walters who has served presidents from Nixon to George W Bush says all have felt the presence of their deceased predecessors. “They have remarked about their personal feelings of sharing the same space as previous residents back to John Adams. The presidents talk about walking the same halls as Lincoln, Roosevelt, Jackson, etc., and the bonds that they share through their common experiences.”
That may be so, but two former first ladies: Abigail Adams and Dolley Madison are unwilling to give up their turf. The Adams were the first presidential couple to live in the White House. It was drafty and damp, with the exception of the East Room where Abigail hung her wash. She’s still seen scurrying to the East Room, arms full of laundry. Dolley Madison’s, wife of the 4th president planted the original Rose Garden. A century after Dolley’s death first lady Mrs Woodrow Wilson decided to remove the garden. Dolley’s ghost appeared to the workmen dismantling it and upbraided them. They fled and the Rose Garden remains. She’s still watchful of her roses.
Only famous families who once lived in famous residences return to haunt. If you’re not famous and if you don’t live in a famous old house, worry not. No ghost will come after you. Sleep easy!

Around ten years ago, a dusky charmer appeared on our television screens in a state-owned play. She performed well and was immediately noticed by the movers and shakers of the industry. Here was somebody to reckon with. Here was a star, ready to be discovered. As for the girl, she had found something that would make her feel liberated; something that would allow her to live life on her own terms.
Maria Wasti consi
dered it an opportunity and pure luck to have landed in such a happening business. And fortunately she did not run out of that luck not even when it came to family matters. Her family supported her decision to take on acting as a career. Her mother was away and not in town when she made her debut in the play which was to be her line of work in the future. It all happened in a jiffy. One day she was not there and when she returned she found her daughter had become a TV actor. But one must say that her mom was quite cool about it and allowed Maria to continue acting. The girl was simultaneously pursuing her Business Management degree.
Maria was not the only one in the family who tried this form of art. Her sister had also dabbled in acting but didn't like the experience so she gave up the idea for good; whereas, Maria had found her calling. Today, she is a
beacon of style and talent. She's come a long way since her Kallu days (another one of her memorable dramas). She's loaded on the oomph factor something that makes her a darling with the media as well as with the audiences. It is hard work and dedication that goes in her favour, but above all it is luck that plays an important part in shaping your career or your life for that matter. It was luck, the right timing and most importantly talent that got her where she is today.
It may seem that the glitterati live in a different world, a world of glitz and dazzle with every moment a scintillating one. But in actuality, Maria, unlike many showbiz and glamour icons, is a down-to-earth and an unassuming person. It's her devotion and dedication that has made her one of the most sought after female actors of present times. Versatility, with a healthy dash of spiritualism and an intelligent mind describes her best. But who is she, really? That is something that has always remained somewhat of an enigma. For, whenever she gives an interview she deliberately manoeuvres the topic of her personal life and brings it to practical life.
A true Leo, Maria does not believe in deviating from her goals; acting is her first and last love. She has not even tried to dabble in the various genres of showbiz… except production. It has been heard that the girl has been involved in some production work in recent months. A witty soul, with a highly developed sense of humour, and a
keen observation, she could well have landed a successful director but she refrains from taking on that particular role. She calls herself a director's actor and has no plans of directing... not at the moment. Maybe at a later stage we might see Maria helming TV projects but that's not on the cards; for the time being she's content being an actor and producer. Maria likes her privacy and expects others (especially media) to respect that. She's quite aware of the prevalent lobby system in showbusiness, but always claims to hail from no specific lobby. However, she believes that there's nothing wrong in lobbying as long as you're not damaging anyone's cause. In her opinion, it exists for the reason that actors often do not want to risk working with people they do not know or are not sure of, which to quite an extent is true.
Success, for Maria does not hold much meaning as she believes that to be successful in Pakistan is not a big deal. It's not like it is in Hollywood. As humble as Maria tries to be, she cannot deny the fact that she is one of the most indispensable faces of showbiz. Considering the girl has sass, the girl has style it is surprising then that she has not opted for ramp modelling. And that's because she claims to have neither the height nor the size to be a model. Self- deprecating now, wouldn't you agree?
Always on the move and doing projects all over the hemisphere, it's Lahore where she heads to for relaxation. Basically she's stationed in Lahore, but in the recent few years she had been shuttling between various places, especially Karachi and Lahore and it was then that she realised she could no longer live out of a suitcase. Hence, Karachi is as much home to her as is Lahore.
At present, Maria is concentrating on her production ventures and equally devoting time to her acting career. She's someone who does not believe in long term planning and takes life as it comes. So she would much rather leave it all up to fate and would wait and see what the future holds for her. With the looks of a siren, she is still a little girl at heart, who feels life is to be valued and cherished without sulking over the unpleasant moments.
| Apart from being the powerhouse of the army, Rawalpindi is famous for little else. The city's affiliation with haute couture, in particular, is about as deep as a toddler's air-inflated water pool. Yet, it was exactly where four top models of the country, five fashion designers, including one from India, and the crème de la crème of Islamabad steered towards on Thursday. | |
| The occasion was the launch of a designer boutique called Black in Jinnah Park, right next to the Army House. The boutique houses signature lines of five designers as well as a spa, all under one roof. The launch was organized Rezz Events, led by the friendly-ubiquitous face of Islamabad, Rezz Aly Shah. Lailomah Khan owns the retail outlet and the label 'Black' is franchised by designer Soba Zuha. The designers include Kersi Dubash from India, Sobia Zuha, Sana Khan, Shan of Bin Chiragh, and Jewellery designers Naveed Zehra and Asif Idrees. Beautician Sobia Hanif inaugurated a spa inside the outlet. From inside, the boutique is tiny, but offers much more than the city is accustomed to. Its interior is simple and pleasing to the eye, with black wooden walls, striking orange niches here and there for the display of items and a wooden floor. | ![]() |
| Its size, though, was no deterrent for the invitees on Thursday. As more and more excited and smartly-dressed young girls and older women swarmed inside, evidently delighted at their entertainment-starved city being the focus of click-happy fashion photographers, the boutique got to the point of being overcrowded and stuffy, with the loud, mostly Punjabi music in the background doing little to help. While the models Sunita Marshall, Rubab, Aleena Khan and Rachel, one by one struck various poses for their mock photo shoots, people crowded around them, while others casually walked around the store. The Indian designer Kersi Dubash, wearing a long white Kurta with intricate chickenkari work, displayed his collection of kurtis and saris (priced at 40, 000 rupees), dominated by the elegant 'Gara' embroidery, along with a few suits of 'kundun'. Called a dying art by some, Gara embroidery originates from the Parsis and is famous for relying on Chinese motifs. | |
| The handbags, steeply priced at 7000 rupees and including Gara embroidery too, were perhaps the most eye-catching items in the store, with ethnic metal beads for holding on to. Dubash even had a bridal collection, but it wasn't put out for display for some reason. Sobia Zuha's collection included bridal, casual and formal lines. Women seemed to like her clothes; many were sold within the first hour. "Very long shirts with short capri pants, double-layered shirts, high, embroidered collar bands, brocade jackets and dotted and striped summery designs are really 'in' these days," she said while talking to Instep. | ![]() |
| Her collection included all that she mentioned. "Islamabad and Karachi follow the same fashion trends. Even in Lahore, people are actually asking us what's in, which is a pleasant development," she said, adding, "In Lahore people mostly follow their own preferences. I noticed that girls are still wearing "Patiala shalwars" over there, even though they're totally out." Sana Khan, 22, from Pakistan School of Fashion Design, is a new face on the fashion scene. She was wearing a stylish, high-collared, hand-embroidered knee-length jacket on a pair of jeans. Her collection, the main focus of the female teen crowd, included western-styled tops with shells and metallic embellishments, halter necks, pleats below the bodice, and peasant sleeves. | |
| There was another local designer called Shan, a 22-year-old fashion student from Iqra Univeristy. His label "Bin Chiragh" included traditional chiffon banarsi and khadi suits, and embroidered kurtis. A few famous faces like Laila Zuberi were present at the event. "I haven't seen anything like this in Islamabad or Rawalpindi," she said pleasantly. Model Sunita Marshall also expressed to Instep that the launch had been a pleasant experience. This was the first time she had done a fashion show in Rawalpindi! | ![]() |
| The much-awaited fashion show at the closing hours of the launch reception featured four bridal dresses by Sobia Zuha. Disappointingly, it was over before it even began, with the first stanza of the background song left hanging in the air. There wasn't much place to sit and most people had to stand at the sides, some blocking the view of those seated. It remains to be seen if people from Islamabad will make an effort to drop by at Black or whether it will be end up pleasing a primarily Pindi crowd. Even then, the city desperately needed some colour and a bit of 'Black' will do it some good. | |
